Lotus Lesson
Trace the basic lotus outline using the tracing paper. Be careful not to press too hard because the traced image is only to be used as a guide
Paint the outside circle and curved center lines first. It’s ok if the lines look bumpy or uneven. This gives character to the final image. Let the lines dry completely before working on the Lotus flowers.
Paint the outlines of each lotus. Paint each petal one at a time starting to paint from one side to the other to keep it balanced. You may notice one side is easier to control depending if you are right or left handed. Try to paint each petal outline from bottom to top. Start painting from the base of the flower and go upward as much as you can. Maybe you will get into a grove. When both flowers are outlined and completely dry erase any visible pencil traced lines.
Look at both flowers in this outline form and correct any obviously visible difference in weight or color. Do not overcorrect at this point because it will stiffen the natural flow.
Paint in the dark background side next. First you will be painting around the white lotus and moving toward the outer outline of the dark side. You need to cover the entire area at one time so it drys evenly. Keep close attention here to make sure as you go that the edge stays wet and alive as you paint.
Optional - if the outside line on the white side looks too uneven carefully adjust it but do not try to get it perfectly even.
Paint the dark lotus first. Keep the outside edges of each petal darker and blend lighter toward the center. When dry highlight the outer edges and tips with slightly darker strokes.
